Into a iO0mL roundbottom flask, was placed a solution of methyl 1, 4dioxaspiro [4.4]- nonane6-carhoxyIate (6.5 g, 34.9 mmol, 1.00 eq.), methanol (60 mL), water (30 mL) and sodium hydroxide (2.78 g, 69.7.00 mmol, 2.00 eq.). The resulting solution was allowed to stir at 80 °C for 2h. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with water and treated with saturated aqueous NaH2PO4 solution to pH=56). The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate thrice. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide 1,4dioxaspiro[4.4]nonane6carboxylic acid as a white solid (3.94 g, 66%).
