Stage #1: Indole-3-carboxaldehydewith sodium hydride at 0;
Stage #2: with water for 2 h;Cooling with ice;

Steps:

General procedure for preparation of N-benzyl indole aldehydes

General procedure: In a typical experimental procedure, indole aldehyde (1 mmol) and sodium hydride (3 mmol) were stirred at zero degree for 15 min; to it corresponding benzyl halide (1.5 mmol) was added, and the reaction mixture was stirred for 5-6 h. After completion of the reaction (monitored using TLC), the mixture was cooled, poured in crushed ice, 200 ml water was added and stirred for 2 h to separate out product, and filtered product was washed and recrystallized by petroleum ether.
