To a mixture of 5-bromonaphthalen-l -amine (2.00 g, 9.01 mmol, 1.00 eq) in pyridine*hydrofluoride (29.8 g, 180 mmol, 27.1 mL, 20.0 eq) was added NaN02 (2.49 g, 36.0 mmol, 4.00 eq) at 0 °C under N2. The mixture was stirred at 25 °C for 30 min, and then heated to 60 °C and stirred for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (20.0 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (30.0 mL x 3). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (50.0 mL c 1), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a residue. The residue was purified by column chromatography (Si()2, Petroleum ether/Ethyl acetate = 1/0 to 1/0). Compound l-bromo-5-fluoro-naphthalene (1.30 g, 4.45 mmol, 49% yield) was obtained as a yellow oil.
