To a solution of 4-metylpiperidine (10 g, 100 mmol) in anh. CH2CI2 (100 ml) was added, at 0° C and under N2, TEA (2.5 eq, 35 ml) and chloroacetyl chloride (1. 2eq, 9.6 ml). The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 6 hours. The solution was diluted with water (60 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3x100 mi). The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to dryness in vacuo to give 13.6 g of the title product (yield : 78%). NMR ('H, CDC13) : 6 4. 57 (d, 1H), 4.11 (d, 2H), 3.82 (d, 1H), 3.12 (t, 1H), 2.67 (t, 1H), 1. 67 (m, 4H), 1.22 (m, 1H), 1.02 (d, 3H). MS (mlz) : 176 [MH] +, 1CI
