General procedure for the preparation of 9H-β-carboline-1-carbaldehides (2).
General procedure: The appropriate alcohols (11a-c, 16.87 mmol) were dissolved in hot 1,4-dioxane (260 mL) and activated manganese dioxide (168.7 mmol, 14.67 g) was added. The mixture was stirred at reflux temperature for 30 minutes. After the reaction was complete, the solid residue was removed by filtration of the hot mixture through a double filter paper. The filtrate was evaporated to afford products 2.
