Method A
General procedure: In a 30mL round bottomed flask, a mixtureof 8-methylquinoline (1.4 g, 10mmol) and dimethyl sulfate(2.5 g, 20mmol) was heated at 60 °C for 15 h. The precipitatedsolid was washed with THF (20 mL) to afford 1,8-dimethylquinoliniummethylsulfate 2a' (1.78 g, 6.6mmol, 66%) as a white solid. When other reaction conditions or substrates were used, reactions were conducted in a similar way.
