Over a 30 minute period, 3 -bromo-adamantane-1 -carboxylic acid (2) (16.0 g, 61.7 mmol) in 50 ml of dry chlorobenzene at -10° C was added to 100 ml dry chlorobenzene and 9.3 g, 70 mmol AlCl3. The mixture was then warmed to room temperature for 1 hour and then heated to 90° C for 10 hours. The mixture was then poured onto 200 g of crushed ice, and the filtered to provide 14.2 g (yield=79.3%) of 3 -(4-chloro-phenyl)-adamantane-l -carboxylic acid (3).
