Steps:

4.3. Alkyl 2-[acetoxy(aryl)methyl]acrylates 3 (general procedure)

General procedure: Acetylchloride (23 mmol, 1.81 g) was added dropwise to a mixture of alkyl 2-[hydroxy(aryl)methyl]acrylates 2 (20 mmol) and pyridine (23 mmol, 1.82 g) in dry CH2Cl2 (10 mL) at 0-5 °C. The resulting solution was warmed to room temperature within 1 h. After stirring overnight, the mixture was diluted with CH2Cl2 (70 mL), treated with 2 M HCl (100 mL), and washed with H2O (100 mL). After drying over anhydrous Na2SO4, the mixture was filtered and the organic layer was concentrated under reduced pressure. In most cases, the crude product 3 was used in the next step without further purification.
