EXAMPLE 21 A solution of 200 mg of 3-[1-(3-acetoxypropyl)-3-indolyl]-4-(1-methyl-3-indolyl)furan-2,5-dione in 1 ml of DMF and 2 ml of 33% aqueous ammonia was heated to 100° C. for 2 hours. 50 ml of water were added and the resulting solid was filtered off, dried and recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 85 mg of 3-[1-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3-indolyl]-4-(1-methyl-3-indolyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione, m.p. 185°-187° C. The furandione starting material was prepared as follows:
