Steps:

[Dimethyl 1-(2-bromoethyl)-1H-pyrazole-3, 5-dicarboxylate] (3a)

A solution of compound 2a (2.5 g, 11.79 mmol); K2CO3 (1.95 g, 14.15 mmol) and 1, 2-dibromoethane (5.01mL, 58.96 mmol) in acetonitrile (70 mL) was refluxed for 18 h. The reaction mixture was cooled; filtered and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (100-200 mesh) using ethyl acetate in hexane to give compound 2 (3.19 g, 85%). MS (ES+) m/z: 320.
