Steps:
2.1. Synthesis
A solution of pinacolone (2.76 mL, 2.00 g, 0.02 mol) and piperonal (3.00 g, 0.02 mol) in methanol (65 mL) was charged with potassium hydroxide (11.22 g, 0.20 mol) in water (25 mL). The reaction vessel was heated at 70 °C under stirred for 5 h, cooled and diluted with water (50 mL). The precipitated solid was filtered off, washed with water (20 mL) and dried to give 3.62 g (78%) of compound 1 (Scheme 1) as a pale yellow solid m.p. 91 °C.
