Stage #2: with water in tetrahydrofuran;Cooling with ice;

Example 10 Preparation of 2-[5-mcthyl-2-(4-methylphenyl)-l,3-oxazol-4-yl]ethanolThe oxazole ester prepared in Example 9 (300 g, 1.22 mol) was dissolved in THF (2.7 L) and solid LiBH₄ (26.6 g, 1.22 mo.) was added in 5-g portions while maintaining temperature below 45⁰C. Reaction was complete within an hour after addition. Solvent was reduced to half volume and then poured into ice water (3 L), The mixture was then acidified by slowly adding 1 ISI HCl (1 L), A white precipitate formed and was collected by filtration and oven dried over P₂O₅ to give the desired oxazoie ester (214 g, 83%).
