Isopropenyl-p-nitrophenyl carbonate (86) (8.7 g, 39 mmol) was dissolved in 4 M hydrogen chloride/dioxane in a sealed vessel. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. Removal of the solvent under reduced pressure gave 10 g (100%) of the title compound (87), which was used in the next reaction without further purification. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): 2.10 (s, 6H), 7.42 (d, 2H, J=9.2 Hz), 8.28 (d, J=9.2 Hz, 2H).
