[0195] To a solution of BOC-Lactam (135.4 g, 526 mmol) in 135 mL of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) was added 5N HCl in 263 mL/1316 mmol isopropyl alcohol (IPA) over 15 min. Vigorous gas evolution occurred for 15 min and then the solution was aged 2.5 h at ambient temperature. Added EtOAc (800 mL) and washed with 15% Na2CO3 (350 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (400 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to oil (5). The enantiomeric purity was assayed at >99% ee.
