Steps:


To a solution of PCC (20.81g, 96.54mmol) in dry CH2Cl2 (300mL) was added Celite (8.0g) and 4Å molecular sieves (8.0g), followed by crude 1,3,5-tris(hydroxymethyl)- 2,4,6-trimethybenzene (2.9g, 13.79mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred vigorously at room temperature for 2d, filtered, and washed with CH2Cl2. The filtrate was concentrate and the residue purified by column chromatography on silica gel using EtOAc/Petro (1/9, v/v) to give compound 7 as a white solid (1.0g, 34%). m.p. 174°C (dec) (lit., 169-170°C (dec)) [19], IR (KBr): ν 1692, 1557, 1448cm-1; 1H NMR (400MHz, CDCl3): δ 10.65 (s, 3H, CHO), 2.67 (s, 9H, CH3); 13C NMR (100MHz, CDCl3): δ 194.2 (C=O), 143.1 (C), 135.0 (C), 16.2 (CH3).
