To a stirred suspension of 2,4-dihydroxy 5-nitrobenzaldehyde 15 (2.76 g, 20 mmol) andpotassium carbonate (6.91 g, 50 mmol) in acetone (30 mL) at ice cooled condition, methyliodide (2.73 mL, 44.4 mmol) was added and reaction mixture allowed to stirred at roomtemperature and monitored by TLC, upon completion of reaction (6 h), workup was doneusing ethyl acetate and water, organic layer was concentrated under reduced pressure toobtain 17, (2.79 g, 84%), brown crystalline solid, 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): δ 4.07 (3H, s), 4.08(3H, s), 6.55 (1H, s), 8.50 (1H, s), 10.28 (1H, s); 13C NMR (CDCl3, 100 MHz) δ 56.49, 56.97, 95.93,NATURAL PRODUCT RESEARCH 1153127.99, 159.53, 165.83, 186.54; IR (KBr) νmax 2981, 2970, 2892, 1702, 1671, 1580, 1420,1302 cm-1; HRMS (ESI): m/z: calcd for C9H9NNaO5 [M + Na]+ 234.0378, Found 234.0376.
