General procedure: In a nitrogen atmosphere, (Z)-5,5-diethoxy-1,3-pentadiene (77.5 g, 0.496 mol), toluene (632 g) and water (18 g) were placed in a reactor, stirred at from 0 to 10° C., subjected to dropwise addition of 20% hydrochloric acid (71 g) at from 0 to 10° C., and then stirred at from 0 to 10° C. for 3 hours. The pH value of the water phase was confirmed to be less than 1 with pH test paper. After addition of water to the reaction product mixture, the resulting mixture was neutralized with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The organic phase thus separated was subjected to conventional work-up including washing and drying to obtain a toluene solution (681 g) of intended (E)-2,4-pentadienal (3) (39.7 g, 0.483 mol) in a yield of 97%.
