Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 2,6-dichloro-4-methoxy-benzaldehydewith [bis(acetoxy)iodo]benzene;ammonium acetate;sodium dodecyl-sulfate in water at 70; for 3 h;
Stage #2: with sodium thiosulfate in water at 20;

Steps:

3 2,6-dichloro-4-methoxybenzonitrile

To a solution of 2,6-dichloro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (10 g, 49.26 mmol) in H2O (100 mL) were added PhI(OAc)2(23.8 g, 73.8 mmol), NH4OAc (5.67 g, 73.8 mmol), sodium tridecyl sulfate (2.84 g, 9.85 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at 70 °C for 3 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, Na2S2O3(18.33 g, 73.89 mmol) was added and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo by flash column chromatography on silica gel to afford the desired product (10 g, 55%). ESI-MS m/z: 200.9 [M+H]+.
