Synthesis of 4,4'-(1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)dibenzaldehyde (4; Scheme I)
A 5% HCl aqueous solution (36 mL) was added to a stirring solution of 3 (900 mg, 1.61 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (180 mL).
The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 48 h, and then the solvent was evaporated in vacuo.
The residue was suspended in a saturated NaHCO₃ aqueous solution (100 mL) and DCM (100 mL).
The organic layer was collected and dried over MgSO₄.
The solvent was removed by evaporation and resulting crude product was purified by column chromatography using DCM.
