To a solution of 2- (2-oxo-2-pyridin-3-yl-ethyl)-malononitrile (Intermediate 8, 680mg) in EtOH (30ml) was added piperizine (2 ml). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 min, and then concentrated in vaccuo. The residual oil was purified by chromatography on silica gel eluting with ethyl acetate to give the title compound as an orange solid (500 mg). TLC: Rf val ue = 0.43 (eluting with ethyl acetate).
