Compound 48.2 (15 g, 76.6 mmol) was dissolved in aqueous 0.3M NaOH (1.5 L) and treated with the dropwise addition of 40% hydrogen peroxide (150 mL). The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 4 h. Residual solids were removed by filtration. The filtrate was wasted with CH2C12 (3 x200 mL), acidified to pH = 3-4 with aqueous concentrated HCl, and extracted with EtOAc (3 x350 mL). The combined organics were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 2-amino- 6-chloro-3-methylbenzoic acid 48.3 (12.7 g, 90%) as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (300 NMR, DMSO-d6) 5 7.02 (d, J= 7.8 Hz, 1H), 6.58 (d, J= 7.8 Hz, 1H), 2.07 (s, 3H).
