Steps:
4.2.1 Synthesis of 2-benzoyloxymethylbenzoyl chloride 3
To a suspension of 2-benzoyloxymethylbenzoic acid 2 (2.41g, 9.4mmol) in toluene (4mL), pyridine (0.74g, 9.4mmol) and thionyl chloride (10mL) were added. The mixture was heated at 80°C on an oil bath for 20min after which it was cooled to room temperature and concentrated in vacuo. The solid residue was extracted with dry hexane (3×25mL) and, after concentration in vacuo, the crude product was recrystallized from petroleum ether to yield 2-benzoyloxymethylbenzoyl chloride 3 as colorless crystals (1.44g, 56%), mp=50-52°C; 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ=5.71 (s, 2H), 7.48-7.56 (m, 3H), 7.60-7.66 (m, 1H), 7.66-7.70 (m, 2H), 8.12-8.14 (m, 2H), 8.33 (s, 1H).
