Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 2-(2-bromo-5-methoxyphenyl)ethanolwith boron trifluoride in dichloromethane at 0 - 20; for 3 h;
Stage #2: with water in dichloromethane at 0;

Steps:

4-Bromo-3-(2-hydroxyethyl) phenol (1-2)

To a solution of 2-(2-bromo-5-methoxyphenyl) ethanol (Compound 1-1) (22 g, 95.2 mmol) in DCM (200 mL) was added tribromoborane (47.5 g, 190 mmol) in DCM (50 mL) at 0 °C The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 h. Upon completion, the solution was poured into ice whiling maintaining stirring at 0 °C The mixture was filtered under reduced pressure and separated into two phases. The aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane (3 χ 100 mL), combined, washed and dried. Concentration in vacuo, followed by crystallization from dichloromethane gave the desired Compound 1-2 (17 g, 82 %) as a white solid. MS(ESI): m/z 199 [M"18+H]+.
