Step a) 4-(2-Chloroacetylamino)benzylcyanide 2-Chloroacetyl chloride (3.3 ml, 5.0 g, 44 mmol) was added dropwise at 10°-15° C. to a solution of 4-aminobenzylcyanide (5.3 g, 40 mmol) in dimethyl acetamide (20 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for one hour. After pouring into water the precipitate was collected, washed with water and dried over P2 O5 under reduced pressure to give the title compound (7.33 g) as nearly colorless crystals, yield: 87.8%, mp 124°-125° C.
