Yield: 76%

Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:4-Ethoxyaniline with potassium acetate;acetic acid at 0 - 5;
Stage #2:chloroacetyl chloride at 20; for 0.5 h;

Steps:

Preparation of 4
2 (1.4 ml, 10 mM) was added to a solution of potassiumacetate (0.98 gms, 10 mM) and acetic acid (20ml). The suspensionwas cooled to 0 - 5°C and then 3 (0.88 ml, 11 mM)was added portion - wise to the suspension. Upon completionof the addition, the heterogeneous mixture was broughtto RT and stirred at RT for 30 min. The white solid thatseparated was collected, washed with water (10 ml), dried.Recrystallization from ethanol afforded 4.Yield= 1.55 gms (76%), M.P=140-145°C.
