A mixture of 4-fluoro-l,2-phenylenediamine (1.26 g, 10.0 mmol) and chloroacetic acid (1.23 g, 13.0 mmol) in HCl (6 M, 7 ml) was stirred at 95 0C for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was neutralized with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution (pH = 9) and the precipitated material was collected, washed with H2O and dried under reduced pressure at 65 °C to give 2-(chloromethyl)-5-fluoro-lH-benzo[d]imidazole (1.58 g,86 %, off-white solid)
