Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:2-Hydroxyimino-1-indanon with sodium hydroxide in water at 50;
Stage #2: with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in water
Stage #3: with hydrogenchloride in water; pH=3 - 4

Indan-l,2-dione-2-oxime (35g, 0.22mol) was added to a solution of 402.5ml 8%NaOH, and the mixture was heated to 50⁰C. Then p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (54.25,0.28mol) was added in portions to the mixture, and the mixture was heated at 80⁰C for 15min. After cooled to room temperature, the precipitate was removed from the mixture. The filtrate was acidified with concentrated HCl to pH =3-4 and the precipitate was collected and dried to give colorless solid (26g, 74% yield). LC- MS: 162 (MH⁺)
