Na2S·9H2O (10.8g, 45.01mmol) was dissolved in DME (35mL), and chloroacetonitrile (4.77g, 63.2mmol) was then added. The mixture was allowed to stir at r.t. (16h). Water was added and the compound was extracted from chloroform (3×40mL). The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed. Elution through a silica plug (1:1 EtOAc:pentane) yielded compound 16 as a colorless oil (3.24g, 28.9mmol, 91%); 1H NMR (400MHz, CDCl3) δH 3.57 (s, 4H); 13C NMR (100MHz, CDCl3) δC 114.9, 17.5; IR(ATR) (cm-1) νmax 2970, 2929, 2246, 1399, 1174, 922; MS (EI): found 112.0089, calcd. for C4H4N2S requires 112.0089. The above values are concordant with literature data.23
