The product was synthesized according to a procedure described in US 3,652,579. 2-Ethoxy-2-methylpropanal (5.63 g, 25 mmol) was added dropwise to potassium bitartrate (2.35 g, 12.5 mmol) in refluxing deionized water (22.5 mL) over 50 minutes. The resulting mixture was refluxed for 70 minutes. The solvent and product were distilled off. Ammonium sulfate (total 8.5 g) was added to the product-solvent mixture. The mixture was stirred and then the two phases were separated and the upper phase was distilled from calcium chloride obtaining the title product (1.60 g, 55%). MS (CI) m/z l l7 (M +l).
