Steps:

2-Methyladamantane (9)

General procedure: 2-Methyladamantan-2-ol, 30 g (0.18 mol), was dissolved in 40 mL of trifluoroacetic acid, and a mixture of 30 mL of GKZh-94 organosilicon oligomer and 40 mL of hexane was added dropwise at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. The mixture was stirred for 1 h and kept at 45-50°C for 50 h. The mixture was cooled, neutralized with 120 mL of a 20% solution of sodium hydroxide, refluxed for 5 h, and steam-distilled. The distillate was extracted with pentane, and the extract was passed through a silica gel column and evaporated. Yield 25 g (92%), mp 151-153°C (from acetone) [68].
