General procedure: A solution of 50.0 g (357 mmol) 2-fluoro-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (CAS-No: 348-27-6) in 300 mL concentrated sulfuric acid was cooled to -15°C. A mixture comprising 22.5 mL nitric acid (65%) and 68.5 mL sulfuric acid was added slowly. After 1 hour the mixture was poured into ice-water. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water and hexan and dried to give 60.0 g (91%) of the title compound.
