A mixture of 3-isopropylphenol (670mg, 4.92mmol), KIO3 (210mg,0.98mmo1) , and I2 (500mg, 1.97mmol) in acetic acid was stirred for 3 days at room temperature. The solvent was removed at reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with EtO and washed with aq, NaHCOs, aq. Na2S2θ3, and brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous MgS04, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified with flash column chromatography to give the title compound (830mg, 64%).<809> 1H NMR(300MHz, CDCl3): 67.54 (d, IH, J =7.8Hz), 6.88 (d, IH, J=1.8Hz), 6.57 (dd, IH, J =8.1, 1.8Hz), 5.21 (s, IH), 2.84 (m, IH), 1.22 (d, 6H, J =7.2Hz).
