Step 1: 2-(Isopropylamino)isonicotinonitrile (90). A mixture of 56 (4.5 g, 32.4 mmol) and isopropylamine (20 mL, 327 mmol) was heated at 90° C. for 48 h in a sealed tube. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo, water was added to the residue and resulting aqueous mixture was extracted with EtOAc, dried over Na₂SO₄, concentrated and purified by column chromatography to afford 90 (1.6 g, 30.8%).
