4.1.1.2. Procedure B: Synthesis of 2-mercapto-3-(3-methoxyphenyl)-acrylic acid (B)

The benzylidene rhodanine derivative (A) was dissolvedin 40 ml of 15% sodium hydroxide solution and heated at 60-70°C for 1 h. Afterward, the reaction mixture was cooled to 0 °C andacidified under stirring by dropwise addition of 40 ml of 10% HCl till pH1. The precipitated solid was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 × 100 ml)and the combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4 andevaporated under reduced pressure. The pure mercaptoacrylic acid derivativewas obtained as an olive green semisolid in a yield of 97% andused in the next step without further purification; mp 98-100 °C; (ESIMS)m/z = 209.1 [M H]- [72].
