To a mixture of 2-benzyloxy-2-methyl-1-propanol (Manchester Organics, 15 g, 83 mmol) in MeOH (200 mL) was added 20% Pd(OH)2-C, wet (3.0 g, 21.4 mmol) in a 500 mL stainless steel pressure bottle. The mixture was stirred for 70 minutes at ambient temperature under 30 psi of H2. The mixture was filtered through a nylon membrane, concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was diluted with Et2O. This material was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (7.4 g, 82 mmol, 99% yield). MS (DCI/NH3) m/z 108 (M+NH4)+
