To a solution of methyl ethyl ketone 4 (10.0 mL, 112 mmol) in dioxane (20 mL) was added selenium(IV)oxide (30 g, 269 mmol). The reaction mixture was refluxed for 6 h, cooled down to room temperature and diluted with a mixture of chloroform and methanol (in a ratio of 1:1). This solution was filtered through a pad of Celite and washed with a chloroform/methanol mixture. The filtrate was concentrated to give the title compound (12 g), which was directly used in the next step, without further purification.
