Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: anthranilic acid amidewith sodium ethanolate in ethanol at 60; for 1 h;
Stage #2: ethyl trifluoroacetate, in ethanol at 60; for 20 h;

Example 1; N-Methyl-N '-(1-m -tolyl-ethylidene)- N-(2-trifluor omethylq uinazolin-4 -y 1- hydrazine; Step-1; 2-(Trifluoromethyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one; To a freshly prepared solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol (8.5g of sodium metal was dissolved in 300ml of ethanol) was added anthranilamide (25g, 0.183mol) in portions and the mixture was stirred under nitrogen at 6O0C for Ih. To this was added ethyl trifluoro acetate (26g, 0.183mol) and the mixture was maintained at this temperature for 2Oh with stirring. The reaction mixture was cooled and the solvent was removed under vacuum. The residue was acidified with 1.5N HCl and the solid precipitated was collected by filtration to afford 12g (31%) of the titled compound as an off- white solid.MP: 243-2460C, LCMS: Mass found (M-I, 212.8), 1H NMR (CD3OD,300MHz) δ 7.69- 7.74 (IH, m), 7.86-7.89 (IH, m), 7.93-7.98 (IH, m), 8.30-8.33(1H, m).
