Steps:
General method for synthesis of carboxylic acids via saponification (2e-h,m,10cf,i-k).
General procedure: To a stirred solution of the appropriate ester (1 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane or ethanol (2 mL), a solution of NaOH (4 mmol, 160 mg) in water (2 mL) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was acidified with aq. 1N HCl, the solvent was removed in vacuo, H2O and CH2Cl2 (1:1 v/v, 30 mL) were added and the aqueous layer was extracted twice with CH2Cl2 (2×20 mL). The organic layer was dried, and the solvents were removed in vacuo.
