Steps:
4-(4-Nitrobenzyloxy)-acetanilide 1
A mixture of 4-acetamidophenol (0.045 mol), 4-nitrobenzyl bromide (0.045 mol) and anhyd. potassium carbonate (7.1g) in acetone (100 ml) was refluxed for 10 hr. Excess of acetone was removed by distillation and residual mass was poured in cold water. The solid thus obtained was washed with water and dried. Yield 80%, m.p.194-96°. IR (KBr) cm-1: 3289 (NH), 1713 (CO), 1567 (NO2), 1252 (-CH2O-).
