A mixture of potassium phthalimide (2.48 g, 13.4 mmol) and m-bromo-tolunitrile (2.63 g, 13.4 mmol) in DMF (40 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. H2O and EtOAc were added. The organic layer was separated, dried over Na2SO4, concentrated in vacuo to give a solid (2.70 g), which was pure enough for the next reaction.
