A mixture of o-xylene 106g (0.998mol), ferric chloride 130g (0.785mol) and the mass concentration of 98% concentrated sulfuric acid 10g added to the reaction flask. The 160g (1.029mol) of carbon tetrachloride was added dropwise to the reaction flask. After completion of the dropwise addition, incubated 0.8 hours at a temperature of 5-10 °C condition, the disappearance of the HPLC detector o-xylene, the reaction can be terminated.Washed with water and ferric chloride excess concentrated sulfuric acid, until pH = 4 ~ 5, a reduced pressure to recover the remaining carbon tetrachloride to give an oil 160g.500g residual oil was recrystallized from ethanol, to give 3,3',4,4'-tetramethylbenzophenone 111.6g, 93.8% yield, 98.4% purity.
