Steps:

2.1 4.2.1 3,3′-Iminodipropionic acid (2)
A mixture of 3,3′-azanediyldipropanenitrile (5.0g, 40.7mmol) and Ba(OH)₂·8H₂O (27.0g, 86.0mmol) in 60mL H₂O was refluxed with stirring for 8h. Equivalent sulfuric acid was added and the formed precipitate was removed by centrifugation. The filtrate was then evaporated off and washed with methanol to afford a white solid (6.3g, yield: 95%). Mp 149-151°C; ¹H NMR (D₂O, 400MHz): δ 2.71 (t, J=6.40Hz, 4H); 3.32 (t, J=6.4Hz, 4H).
