Synthesis of [1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-5'-ol

In a 100 mL 2-neck round bottom flask 3,5-dibromophenol (3 g, 0.0119 mol), phenylboronic acid (6.111 g, 0.05012 mol), potassium carbonate, (7.733 g, 0.05595 mol), and palladium (II) dichloride di(triphenyl phosphine) (0.039 g, 0.00005595 mol) were added and purged 1 x N2 gas.30 mL of Dioxane and 7.5 mL of water were then added and the reaction was refluxed for 16 hours.. The reaction was quenched with 100 ml of water. The aqueous layer was washed 3 x with 30 mL EtAc. The organic layers were combined and washed 1 x saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, 1 x water, 1 x saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated. The crude reaction mixture was purified by silica gel column chromatography 0 to 100 % dichloromethane in hexanes. Yield 3.611 g (0.01466 mol, > 99 %); 1H NMR (80 MHz, CDCl3) 7.63-7.36 (m, 11H), 7.05-7.03 (m, 2H), 4.91 (s, 1H); LC/MS [M]+H 247.1
