Steps:
Preparation of 3-(benzylamino)-4-ethoxycyclobut-3-en-1,2-dione (3)
A solution of 3,4-diethoxycyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione 1 (1.73 mmol, 0.25 ml) and Et3N (1.73mmol, 0.24 ml) in 5 ml EtOH was cooled to 0 °C. Benzylamine was added (1.73 mmol,0.19 ml) and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. The solventwas removed under reduced pressure and the crude product was purified by columnchromatography (30 g silica gel, eluent: DCM/MTBE = 10:1) to give 0.39 g (99%) 3 ascolorless oil.
