Steps:

1.2 Step 2: Preparation of 3-chloro-1-methyl-4-nitro-1H-pyrazole (43)
To an ice-cold solution of 3-chloro-1-methyl-1H-pyrazole (42) (30 g, 0.26 mol) in concentrated sulfuric acid (50 mL) was slowly added fuming nitric acid (40 mL, 0.91 mol) drop wise. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 6 hours. After completion of reaction (TLC monitoring), the reaction mixture was poured into ice-cold water, the resulting solid was filtered and washed with pentane afforded the desired product (43) as yellow solid (30 g; Yield: 73%).¹H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 8.16 (s, 1H), 3.94 (s, 3H).
