Steps:

4-Carboxy-2-hydroxy-formanilide (9c)

General procedure: Asolution of 4-amino-3-hydroxybenzoic acid (17, 150mg, 1.0 mmol) in formic acid (206 μL, 4.0 mmol) and water (2 mL) was heated at70 °C overnight. After being cooled, the reaction was concentrated in vacuo.The residue was dissolvedin water (2 mL) and neutralized with aqueous saturatedNaHCO3solution.Concentrationin vacuo,and purification bycolumn chromatography (dichloromethane:methanol = 5:1)gave9c (148 mg, 83%)
