A suspension of 2-methylpiperazine (1.03 g), 4-fluoronitrobenzene (0.55 mL) and potassium carbonate (0.745 g) in acetonitrile (20 mL) was heated under reflux for 3.5 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed with water and saturated brine and dried over sodium sulfate and filtered and concentrated. The residue was vigorously stirred in isopropyl ether, and the deposited solid was collected by filtration and dried under reduced pressure to obtain 884 mg (77%) of the title compound as a yellow solid. MS(FAB) m/z:222 (M + H)+.
