Reaction Conditions:

with lithium aluminium tetrahydride in diethyl ether at 0; for 3 h;Inert atmosphere;

Steps:

3-(Methyl-d3)but-2-en-4,4,4-d3-1-ol (3a)

General procedure: To a suspension of LiAlH4 (3.04 g, 0.08 mol, 1.5 eq.) in dried Et2O (30 mL) at 0 °C, under nitrogen, a solution of ester 2 (6.85 g, 0.05 mol, 1 eq.) in dried Et2O (20 mL) was carefully added. The mixture was stirred for 3 h before being quenched by dropwise addition of 2M HCl (40 mL). The organic layer was separated, and the aqueous layer was further extracted with diethyl ether (3 × 50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (2 × 100 mL) and brine (100 mL), then dried over anhydrous MgSO4. The solvent was removed in vacuo to afford the title product 3 (3.31 g, 72 %) as a colourless oil, which was directly used for the next step.
