Steps:

1 3-Methyl-4-nitro-1H-indole and 3-Methyl-6-nitro-1H-indole

3-Methyl-4-nitro-1H-indole and 3-Methyl-6-nitro-1H-indole A mixture of N-(3-nitro-phenyl)-N'-propylidene-hydrazine dissolved in 85% H3PO4 (20 mL) and toluene (20 mL) was heated at 90-100° C. for 2 h. After cooling, toluene was removed under reduced pressure. The resultant oil was basified with 10% NaOH to pH 8. The aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (100 mL*3). The combined organic layers were dried, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford a mixture of 3-methyl-4-nitro-1H-indole and 3-methyl-6-nitro-1H-indole (1.5 g, 86% over two steps), which was used directly in the next step.
