Steps:

1-(4-Methylpyridin-2-yl)thiourea (1)

Compound 1 was synthesized by adapting a literature protocol[18]. 7.4 mL of 1 N aqueous NaOH were added to a stirred suspension of 1-benzoyl-3-(4-methylpyridin-2-yl)thiourea(2.00 g, 7.37 mmol) in 15 mL of methanol. The mixture was then heated to reflux for 1 h. After cooling to room temperature, a white solid formed, which was separated byfiltration, washed with deionized water and dried over P2O5in a vacuum desiccator to yield 1.00 g of 1 (5.98 mmol,81%). Physical properties were in agreement with thosereported in the literature [19]. Crystals of 1α suitable forX-ray diffraction were obtained by recrystallization from methanol, and those of 1β were grown from a solution in CDCl3by slow evaporation of the solvent.
